Dear Mom and Dad,
This week, as I knelt in prayer with a General Authority in the Kuching chapel in East Malaysia, I was truly humbled. This past week has been amazing. I have been able to be in the presence of three General Authorities and trained by two of them. Elder Wong came to the Singapore Stake Conference and gave great trainings on the Sabbath day. He also attended some of the mission tour we had. He has great insights. Then Elder Christensen came to Church because his son is in our ward and they just had a kid. Then, my personal favorite was Elder Nielson and his wife. He is the Director of the Missionary Department. They came and toured our mission and he gave us some training. Oh my gosh it was good. I learned so much. The first day, he had Sister Fugistaler and I come to the leadership training he gave which was just a small group of us. We were the only Sisters and it was so good. He talked about how we, as leaders, will be leaders of the Church in the future. We are in the positions we are in not just for now, but to train us for the future. He told us that to be a good leader we act immediately with whatever it is, correction or getting something done. There is no “they” in this Church. It is you! Also, we must be agents who act, not objects acted upon. One of Satan’s biggest tools is to get people to be vegetables and do nothing with life. He said, “If you want to be successful in life, you must act”. So that meeting was really good.
Then we went to the main meeting with the rest of Singapore. We talked about a lot of topics, but the main thing I got out of it was when we were talking about the enabling power of the Atonement and how people don’t really ever access that part. They get the redeeming power of it just fine when they sin and understand that part but the enabling power helps us with everything!! We can access it by submitting cheerfully and with patience.
We discussed how the loads of life are what actually help us grow and become. They are necessary. Most people think life is perfect when we have no load, but that is not true. If you are not changing, you are being acted upon. Don’t Be Acted Upon!! We also talked about how getting new investigators comes from the less actives and not so much the members. We also talked about how to take control of the work.
Sister Nielson is a boss. She gave a great training on our companions. But, you know, all while both of them taught it was like life lessons intertwined with the Gospel and it made a heck of a lot more sense because it’s like, “Oh, okay, I can use this later in life”. Sister Nielson also talked about how there is a big difference between tolerating and completely embracing someone. She talked about how it was when they were raising their family and how the family dynamics change when their children got married and were introduced to new traditions in another family. Instead of only eating Mexican food and going boating, they now have so many more things to do together. We must completely embrace our companions because they can teach us so much. And, I guess it’s true with those we date and marry as well.
Alright, so my most favorite part of the week…here we go, are you ready!? I got to go to East Malaysia and be trained by Elder Nielson some more!!! It was a dream! We got there and got the tail end of the question and answer session of the East Conference. I learned SO much more! So one thing I learned was that the Holy Ghost and the Spirit are two different things completely. So the Holy Ghost is a “someone”. The Spirit is a “something”. The Holy Ghost can only be in one place at a time. The spirit is influenced by the Holy Ghost. The spirit does not have agency. So, for example, if you go into a bar you say you leave the spirit at the door; it’s true. The spirit cannot go in there with you even if it wanted to because it has no agency.
Then the best meeting I have been to on my mission was MLC! Elder Nielson did most of it and it was more of just like all the leaders from the mission together having a discussion. Again, I learned a lot. And at the end of it all, we knelt with Elder Nielson in prayer as he closed the mission tour. It was one of the most powerful prayers I have heard.
The rest of this week was miracle filled. I went on exchanges with Sister O’boyle. She is great!! We had a miracle when this man just wanted us to teach him when he saw our tags! It was crazy!
I am glad you all had a party in Florida and are able to run and bike now. … jealous, haha, but good on ya!
I love you!
